Waste tax ends

WHILE WASTE HAULERS used a 40-truck convoy to protest the introduction of a garbage tipping fee, Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler revealed the much-hated municipal solid waste tax is about to die a natural death.

Government is going to Parliament next month with an order to repeal it, and Sinckler told the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday he had absolutely no plans of resuscitating it.

However, he made it clear that the absence of the approximately $40 million it brought to the Treasury during its life meant the island now had a major funding gap to fill for programmes aimed at protecting the environment.
