Inniss queries major cost of Sir Hilary’s installation

The amount of money the University of the West Indies is spending on the “coronation” of “king Hilary” is of tremendous concern to Minister of Commerce Donville Inniss.

While calling on the Press to probe the elaborate ceremony planned for this weekend at the university’s sports complex at the Lazaretto in Black Rock, at which Sir Hilary Beckles will be officially installed as vice chancellor of the entire UWI system, Inniss said he had been told it would cost “half a million US dollars”.

He questioned whether there was a need for such an elaborate event in the current economic environment where guests would dine on “caviar and lobster tails”.

According to Inniss, the university should explain just how many students could have their tuition fees covered if that money was applied to such a cause.
