OVER 100 VOLUNTEERS turned out for the Seaweed Battle Challenge at Silver Sands Beach, Christ Church this morning.

Done in conjunction with the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors, the challenge had a two-fold purpose of cleaning the beach as well as raising funds for the Thelma Vaughan Memorial Home.

Kaila Headley, a member of the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Committee, said they decided to do this clean-up with a twist. Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre (which is paying $50 per tonne) will donate the funds.

The Challenge took place among the groups to see which one would get the biggest haul. There were also other cash prizes and vouchers up for grabs, like the youngest and oldest person on the beach.

Volunteers came from Springer Memorial, Christ Church Foundation School, Rubis, Barbados Youth Development Corporation and the United States Embassy. (SAT)
