ABOUT 150 VOLUNTEERS collected, bagged and loaded hundreds of pounds of seaweed yesterday at Silver Sands, Christ Church.
They had accepted the challenge of cleaning up the seaweed and, according to organiser Kaila Headley, of the Caricom Youth Ambassadors committee, corporate Barbados and schools were called upon to get involved.
The Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre offered an incentive of $50 per tonne. Headley said the funds raised would be donated to the Thelma Vaughan Memorial Home.
Among the teams involved were the Barbados Youth Development Council, Christ Church Foundation School, Springer Memorial School, Team Rubis and the US Embassy.
Two National Conservation Commission trucks and a Bobcat were on hand to transport the tonnes of seaweed after the clean-up. (RL)
