Jamaica announces team for Netball World Cup

ONE DAY AFTER sweeping the three-match series against Barbados Gems, Netball Jamaica has announced the final for the Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia from August 7 to 16.

According to the news release, the 12-member team comprises captain Nicole Aiken-Pinnock, Paula Thompson (Vice Captain), Romelda Aiken, Shanice Beckford, Kadie-Ann Dehaney, Nicole Dixon, Stacian Facey, Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, Anna Kay Griffiths, Sasher-Gaye Henry, Khadijah Williams, and Vangelee Williams.

The reserves are Shantal Slater and Adean Thomas, who will continue to train with the team they leave Jamaica.

Head coach Minneth Reynolds said the 12 players earned their spot on the team through their performance in the recent series as well as the training camp.

“The others truly deserved to be a part of this team but we only need twelve. We know that this team will represent us with pride and dignity, so let’s give them our support,” she said.

The five players who were not selected will join the Elite League All-Star team to compete against the Sunshine Girls in a two-match series on July 3 and 5 as they continue preparation.

Team Jamaica will leave the country on July 30 for a three-day camp in Canberra before moving on to Sydney. They have been drawn in Pool B with England, Scotland and Samoa.

Jamaica beat Barbados 52-22, 64-30 and 66-31 in the series.

The Barbados Gems for the World Netball Cup have not been announced. They have been drawn with Australia, New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago in Pool A. (PR/SAT)
