DANIELLE TITUS delivered Barbados’ first medal of the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Swimming Championships in fine style.

Earlier this evening at the Aquatic Centre, Titus won gold in the 11-12 Girls’ 100 metre backstroke in the new meet record of 1:07.14. She obliterated the old record of 1:08.45 set way back in 1979 by Teresa Rivera. Gabriella Donahue of Trinidad and Tobago was second in 1:08.07.

A shocked Titus admitted to NATION Online that she did not expect to have swum so fast, even though she went in to the event with the fastest qualifying time.

“I was hoping to keep it up. I was aiming for 1:08.00,” said a breathless Titus.

Team captain Lani Cabrera was an easy winner in the 18 and Over Women’s 800 metre freestyle. Cabrera won in 9:13.23. (PG)
