DEAR CHRISTINE: Can’t wait another two years

Dear Christine,

SO MANY TIMES I read your column and see stories of girls who are in love with men and would love to get married, but the men are not interested. My case is quite the opposite.

I am in love with a girl who says she loves me a lot but who will not consider getting married or even engaged.

While she is working, she wants to complete another level of her education. She says then and only then will she go steady and get married. I really want to marry her as soon as possible but she keeps saying, “No, not yet”.

If I go with her timetable we won’t be saying any “I dos” for another two years. I don’t know if I can wait that long. Doesn’t she understand that life can get lonely if she continues to remain single?

Dear T,

As hard as this may be for you to comprehend, some women are quite happy being single – for as long as they can be. It is also true that some women are eager to walk up the aisle at all cost. Obviously, your girlfriend does not consider this to be the chance of a lifetime. She considers her studies more important and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

As a matter of fact, I admire her. I think more overly-eager young women would do well to apply themselves to their studies, more than they do to those “over the moon” affairs which end nowhere. Education is important.

Don’t pressure this young woman; you could lose her altogether. If you truly love her you’ll wait. Two years waiting for the one you love is not a long time at all. What you can do while she is studying is start to plan your future together, putting the necessary things in place, saving for the big day, life together and so on.
