SANITATION SERVICE Authority (SSA) workers remain off the job today.
This morning they met with President of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) to air their grievances following an incident that led to police being called to the SSA’s, Wildey headquarters.
The workers began their strike action yesterday with no garbage collections and no burials at public cemeteries. However, President of the shop stewards at SSA Hugh Smith said this morning National Conservation Commission trucks turned up at the depot to fuel up but were told it was closed off.
“I told them that we were on a shut down so therefore nothing could happen then the acting general manager came over and gave an instruction to open the gate,” Smith said.
He said shortly after, police were summoned to the depot, which led him to contact the NUPW representatives for a meeting.
After the meeting President of the NUPW Akanni McDowall said he had to meet with the General Secretary and technical staff before giving an official comment.
McDowall said that a meeting was scheduled for today with Minster of Labour Dr Esther Byer, as well as the BIDC board at 3 p.m.
He noted that the industrial relations climate remains the same.
Meanwhile, Smith said the SSA workers would continue to remain off the job. (LK)
