Swift makes history at University Games

DRAPED IN the national flag after winning Barbados’ first ever medal at the World University Games, a tear slipped from Greggmar Swift’s eye and he discreetly wiped it with the Broken Trident.

Swift had just won gold in the men’s 110-metre hurdles in 13.43 seconds after going into the final with the fastest qualifying time. Russia’s Konstantin Shabanov took the silver in 13.57 and Japan’s Genta Masuno the bronze in 13.69.

Back at his Gwangju, South Korea hotel, emotions got the better of the 24-year-old Swift and tears flowed freely.

“The emotions just took over,” he told SUNSPORT in an interview hours after the race. “It is nothing I can explain, winning your country’s first ever World University title and all that is playing on my mind. My heart was really heavy with joy.
