FOUR FISHERMEN at Oistins took matters into their own hands yesterday after they were unable to get their boats to shore because of the troublesome Sargassum seaweed.
Armed with hoes and forks, they got down to the arduous task of separating the weed to create a channel through which their boats and their catch could be brought to shore.
“We making some channels that the sea would come back in and allow us with the small boats to get back our boats on the beach and also stop the breeding of small flies,” said Stephen Cox.
A vendor who did not want to give her name said she was grateful for the efforts of the fishermen since the seaweed and the flies were “humbugging” her and her customers.
“This is three weeks that the weed is here at Oistins Bay and nobody came to look to see what is going on here,” she said. “We have one of the more popular food businesses at Oistins Bay Garden and seaweed has covered the whole sea. If you see the amount of flies that here on the bay we need some help, immediate help.”
The vendor said the situation was not healthy for the stall owners or their customers, including tourists. (MB)
