QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL staffers 60 years and over will meet with management today to discuss retirement options.

However, a reliable source at the institution insisted the meeting had nothing to do with forcing these workers into retirement similar to what was attempted at the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC).

“It is strictly a human resources matter that the hospital wants to clear up with persons who are approaching retirement age. We have had situations where people were not tracking their years of service and it came to a point where people reached their 33-and-a-third (maximum persionable) years of service and did not know,” said the source. “That is my understanding of the matter.

“It really has a lot to do with succession planning. Some people have indicated when they are going and we are just trying to see how we can organise this according to the department.”
