How long have you been on the music/entertainment scene? I have been in the music entertainment scene since 2010 when I entered Junior Monarch for the first time.
How did you come to be influenced by soca/calypso? I grow up with hearing soca and calypso on the radio. I always wanted to be on stage performing in front of a crowd of people. I met Aziza Clark at school. We became friends then I started singing her songs and she urged me to enter the Junior Monarch . So I did the following year with a song my uncle Antony Walrond write for me called Violence And Non-violence.
What in your view was your big break? When I won Junior Monarch in 2013 as a first time semi-finalist and finalist. And I was awarded the BATMAN [Barbados Association of Tent Managers] Award that year for best rendition of the year.
What is the lowest you have ever been in your career? That would be for three years trying out for Junior Monarch and never making it past the preliminaries.
Hardest lesson you have learnt as a female in the music industry? No one in the industry is your friend. It is all about money and game. If you have those then you have friends. Otherwise you are nobody and nobody wants to be your friend.
What is your most memorable? When I won Junior Monarch and sharing that moment with first my best friend Aziza then my mum on stage, my husband (to-be at that time) and the disabled community who came to support me at the show that night.
As a female artiste how important is image to you? Very important to me as my state of mind. Because I can be as beautiful as a diamond but be just as fake as the beauty of it. So I balance the beauty on the outside and inside. So what you see is what you get. Beauty inwards out and honesty.
How do you stay grounded? By keeping the faith that I am on a mission. Not all for myself but for others.
How do you turn off and get away from it all? Every night before I go sleep. Also by giving thanks for another day and looking at my husband and daughter as they sleep . . . feeling blessed to have them in my life.
What is your focus now in terms of your career? To continue my career by bettering myself as time passes. Also I would love to tour and be able to give back by giving to worthy causes.
Pet peeve? Bad-minded people.
If it wasn’t music what would it be? I would be into cosmetology and being a chef.
How do you pick competition songs? The songs must suit my character. Also I must be able to connect with the song and the melody must be sweet and synchronised.
Why do you think the 2013 winning Junior Monarch song Respect The Disabled was so successful? The song was out of the box because no one had ever fused a calypso song about the disabled with a touch of jazz.
