Lionfish fishery to bring big bucks

WITH TRADITIONAL FISHING taking a battering from a number of sides, the lionfish market could be the next major money earner for fishermen.

And not only will it put money in the pockets of the fishermen, but it will also help to rid the island’s reefs of the voracious predator.

This is the projection of marine biologist and dive instructor at Barbados Blue, Andre Miller, who rolled out a plan yesterday to train two fishermen, initially, to become SCUBA lionfish hunters.

Lionfish were now found on every reef around the island, in deep as well as shallow waters.

The average weight is between six to eight pounds. They are now over a foot long and can eat their body weight in juvenile fish every day.
