It’s visit No. 104 for honorary Bajan

ABOUT TWO weeks after United States president John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Gerald Maher made his first trip to Barbados – and he has not stopped coming since.

He met his wife and was married here; he has attended funerals and family functions here, and eventually “it all added up”.

The regular bustle at Grantley Adams International Airport was interrupted yesterday when trumpets were suddenly blown, announcing the arrival of a VIP. People craned their necks and sought better vantage points to see the arrival, but soon the question heard murmured among the crowd was: “Who is this man?”

Maher, a Wanderers Cricket Club fan, is no movie star or pop culture icon, but he has been coming to Barbados for more than 50 consecutive years and logged his 104th visit yesterday.
