THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES (UWI) Cave Hill Campus is in search of a new vice-principal as the man who held the post for almost a year prepares to demit office.

Professor Pedro Welch is retiring after giving an overall 34 years to the institution. A replacement has not been named.

Principal Professor Eudine Barriteau said several candidates were being considered.

“As principal, I certainly hope to have a decision by September 1,” she said.

Welch, the son of women’s rights advocate Dame Maizie Barker-Welch, received his official send-off at a short ceremony at the UWI Cave Hill campus on Tuesday evening.

Barriteau was among a number of people who lauded his contribution to the institution, saying he served well and with distinction.
