THE CUSTOMS and Excise Department has ended industrial action but businesses have been left counting the costs.
Lost sales, excessive storage charges, late deliveries, eroded goodwill and a threat to future business from valued customers are the fallout from weeks of a go-slow by customs officers protesting aspects of Government’s plans to transition that department to the Barbados Revenue Authority, businesspeople lamented.
The customs officers returned to work last Friday and manager of Terminal Operations at the Bridgetown Port Inc., Ian Stuart, said yesterday work had resumed to reduce the backlog of containers and other cargo there.
