THE ISLAND’S MAGISTRATES appear to be bowing to “public outcry” when they deny certain accused bail. This is the view of eminent lawyer, Queen’s Counsel and retired jurist Leroy Inniss.
But another long-standing attorney, who is also a Queen’s Counsel, feels the focus on public pressure “paradoxically obscures and amplifies a legal truth”.
“While it conveys the impression that the public should have no influence on the issue of bail, the statement also reminds us that the public has a vested interest in the granting or refusal of bail,” Ralph Thorne told the Daily Nation.
Inniss was giving a lecture titled Your Rights Under the Constitution – one in the public legal education series Know the Law! Know Your Rights! at the St Mark’s Resource Centre, St Philip on Saturday evening. (HLE)
