BARBADOS HAS LOST one of its oldest pioneers in the restaurant business.

Evelyn Walcott, who founded the legendary “Granny’s” restaurant at Oistins, passed away at her Enterprise, Christ Church home Tuesday night after a prolonged illness.

Ninety-six-year-old “Granny” Walcott as she was known to many, operated the canteen at the former Christ Church Boys’ Foundation School for over 40 years and was highly regarded by generations of students of that school and the adjacent Christ Church Girls’ Foundation School.

She later opened and operated “Granny’s” in Oistins, attracting countless patrons long before the Oistins Bay Garden became a reality. She expanded the business with branches in Bridgetown and at the Grantley Adams International Airport, but these were subsequently closed.

Government recognised Walcott’s contribution to the hospitality industry with the award of a Barbados Service Medal in the 2009 National Independence Honours.

Mourning their loss are Walcott’s sons Charles “Rudy” Walcott and Winston Walcott, as well as a large extended family. (GC)
