Inniss: No major issue with libel laws

DESPITE SUGGESTIONS in some quarters that they have become outdated, retired judge Leroy Inniss does not believe Barbados’ libel laws should be changed in any significant way.

The Queen’s Counsel said while the law could be tweaked, he did not “see any major problems” with it.

He further suggested that any attempt to muzzle the Press should be resisted, adding there should be concern about the treatment of some people in the media.

“Anytime you hear others trying to silence any section of the Press, sometimes they may be annoying but it is better for the Press to be a bit irksome than for any administration . . . to try to censure it and bring its freedom to an end,” he said. (WILLCOMM)
