185 cops short

THE Royal Barbados Police Force is finding itself hard-pressed to meet ongoing demands due to a manpower shortage.

Acting Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith has made that disclosure even as authorities report a ten per cent increase in crime for the first seven months of the year linked to the illegal drug trade.

He said the force was 185 police officers short of the ideal complement of 1 528.

“We clearly are short on numbers in terms of vacancies so we have to work to try to attract more young people joining thee force. It’s kind of fairly hard-pressed to meet the demands that we are called to deal with,” he said while a guest on The People’s Business on the state-run CBC Sunday night.
