AS THE CAVE HILL CAMPUS reels from an almost 50 per cent drop in student enrolment in two years, the new principal has urged the Barbados Government to re-examine the structure of its tuition fee policy.
“In two years,” said Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Eudine Barriteau, “the effect of the policy is dramatic and I urge the Government, on behalf of Barbadian students, to investigate ways to make it possible for students, who wish to earn a degree at the Cave Hill or any other UWI campus, to be able to do so.”
But, an optimistic Barriteau said it’s not all doom and gloom for the university as it had tightened its financial belt in a number of cost cutting measures, including freezing vacant positions and eliminating courses with low enrolment.
The Cave Hill Campus principal, who was delivering the address at the matriculation ceremony for the start of the 2015 academic year, said a mere 266 students had enrolled in graduate programmes this year, down from 1 285 two years ago.
