THE DAY Robin Hunte succumbed to cancer was the day the music died for the Merrymen.
“I think Robin’s passing is the end of an era, especially for the Merrymen,” said his bandmate, early touring room-mate and friend, bassist Chris Gibbs, with a catch in his voice.
“And you have witnessed our last performance. The day Robin died is the day our music died,” he said as he referred to the 1971 folk classic American Pie by Don McLean.
Yesterday, the standout tenor guitarist’s final “concert” took place at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens before his immediate family and his extended one of musicians, radio personalities, politicians, trade unionists and scores of people with whom he had come into contact.
And it was a “concert” of which Hunte would have been proud.
