A CALL IS GOING OUT for more people to educate themselves about the care of dementia patients.
Speaking yesterday at a seminar at the Savannah Hotel that formed part of activities for Alzheimer’s Week, Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett encouraged people to make use of the facilities available at the Barbados Alzheimer’s Association to enhance their knowledge about the disease.
His call came against the backdrop of the “incredible burden” the care and cost of dementia placed on Government, society and family, and the fact that about 54 per cent of the elderly people in the Geriatric Hospital were dementia sufferers.
Additionally, it was projected that 11.5 million people across the world would be diagnosed with dementia by 2050, and the increase was expected to take place in developing countries like Barbados.
