BARBADOS WILL JOIN THE rest of the world in celebrating National Arbor Day on Tuesday, under the theme: Trees: The Circle of Life.

Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr Denis Lowe, is expected to deliver the feature address during the official opening ceremony and tree planting exercise at the Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve on that day, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Staff of the National Conservation Commission (NCC) who recently completed training in tissue culture will also be presented with their certificates during that ceremony.

This will be followed by two environmental school tours and plant propagation workshops, the first of which will be held on Thursday for primary schools, and then on Friday  for secondary school students. Both will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the NCC’s Codrington, St. Michael headquarters.

On Saturday, September 26, members of the public are invited to attend a number of activities at the NCC’s headquarters from 8 a.m.

These include a plant propagation workshop, which runs from 9 to 10 a.m., and two 45-minute environmental tours, the first of which begins at noon, while the second will start at 2 p.m.

The first of two practical demonstrations on How to Use Sargassum Seaweed in Your Garden, will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the second starting at 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, the NCC is encouraging members of the public and organised groups such as the Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis and Optimist Clubs and Constituency Councils to host tree planting exercises in honour of the day.

Persons who require trees or technical assistance may contact the NCC at 425-1200. (BGIS)
