IN ABOUT a month, pedestrians crossing the Spring Garden Highway to Brandon’s Beach should feel safer.
Construction has begun on a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights, situated near to Weiser’s on the Bay. There will also be a ramp for the differently abled.
Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley said it was a temporary solution until a more permanent one was put into place.
“We had a number of options [such as] an over pass or an underpass but the costing at this time was a little prohibitive, so this solution is in keeping with our budget . . . about $137 000. Upon speaking to the engineer, we recognise there could be some way we can go about building an underpass on this highway but we have to go back to our technical people to analyse it,” he said.
Member of Parliament Chris Sinckler said he was happy with the decision in light of the accidents and fatalities recorded on the highway. He also thanked the Barbados Road Safety Association – which was represented by president Sharmane Roland-Bowen and public relations officer Richard Cox – for their efforts advocating safety on the highway.
Roland-Bowen said she was almost speechless as this was such a big achievement. She urged motorists to respect the lights once built. (CA)
