No time for panic mode

THE LEGISLATION OF BUILDING CODES and a disaster preparedness programme should be on top of every CARICOM country’s to do list.

Those are the two main planks on which Eastern Caribbean government need to focus on as a matter of urgency if the region is to properly deal with large natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.

That suggestion is coming from Dr Joan Latchman, a senior seismologist at the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Seismic Research Institute.

dr-joan-latchman-092715“Certainly, building codes are a very important measure right now. We need to have building codes applicable to our region, and legislative frameworks put in place to make sure those codes are enforced,” Latchman told the SUNDAY SUN.
