RACHEL SMITH qualified for the finals of the Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Limited Monarchs of the Court road tennis championship while Julian “Michael Jackson” White cruised to within one game from successive finals before the rain washed out Tuesday night’s action at the Flow Sports Club, Wildey.

Smith, who is ranked number two, was hardly threatened by the fit Sheldene Walrond, who after a matching first game meekly surrendered 21-19, 21-14. The large crowd was expecting a keener battle between those two particularly after they locked scores from 15 up to 19 in the first game.

However, the rapidly improving Smith took charge in the second game although the players matched scores from five to 10. Smith showed her class when she trailed the only time in the match at 8-9 to equal with a gliding smash that went through Walrond’s paralysed forehand with venom.

After that, it was almost one-way traffic as Smith maintained her cool to take the game and match.
