Elderly abuse a concern

TOO MANY ACTS OF VIOLENCE are being committed against the elderly in Barbados, says president of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) Ed Bushell.

“Too often we find older persons being victims of violence. When I say violence I do not necessarily mean physical violence, but people take their pension cheques or rob them of what little they have,” he said.

Bushell was speaking at the recent launch of the association’s Golden Homes Group Homeowners Insurance Plan in conjunction with CGM Gallagher, at the company’s headquarters in Haggatt Hall, St Michael.

With regard to security for older people, BARP executive manager Elsa Webster said there was a programme available to members of BARP. (RA)
