‘Heritage site not in jeopardy’

THE PRESIDENT of the Barbados National Trust (BNT) is optimistic the construction of the proposed Hyatt Towers on Lower Bay Street, The City, would not endanger the World Heritage Site designation accorded Bridgetown and its Garrison.

Dr Karl Watson admitted during a lecture Tuesday night that there was fear in some sections of the society that the hotel construction within the heritage zone could cause a backlash.

However, Watson said he was hoping it spurred positive action.

“I think, hopefully, it would serve as a catalyst for the long talked about and always delayed restoration of the Empire Theatre. I would love to see that happen. I would love to see a bit further up the road the Eye Hospital restored. . . (WILLCOMM)
