HE MIGHT not have had the send-off with colour and celebration with which he was associated in life at his interment, but a memorial service held for the late Reginald Cave had its fair share of praise and music at the St Michael’s Cathedral, St Michael’s Row earlier today.

The teacher and Grand Kadooment band leader who died almost a month and a half ago was remembered by friends and acquaintances as one who loved to create and show kindness to everyone he met.

DeCourcey Hutson who organised this morning’s event with band leader Gwyneth Squires described Cave as a mentor.

“It was last minute but it was proper communication. Everything went well,” said Hutson.

Chetwin Stewart president of the Barbados Association Masqueraders said Cave gave a lot to the creative arts and people and was very glad that the memorial service took place.

Stewart also supported an earlier comment from culturalist Adisa Andwele that he was going to suggest to the NCF to name a Grand Kadooment prize after Cave.

“BAM is going to push for that next year that one of the prizes be named after Reggie Cave,” said Stewart.

Dean of St Michael’s Cathedral Dr Frank Marshall who delivered the sermon described Cave as a teacher and a cultural artist.

He said Cave worshipped at the Cathedral and “the news of his death had certainly saddened me”.

The Dean said he had waited on someone to contact him “so that the appropriate arrangements could be made for his funeral.

“I waited; made inquiries within the limited sphere of information I could find . . . and to learn a few weeks ago that his mortal remains had been interred seemingly without service”.

He said as a result he wanted to proceed with the service “to have a moment of prayer and commendation on his being to the God who gave him life”.

Senator Harry Husbands who was representing the Ministry of Education recalled early memories of Cave when they were both trainee teachers at Erdiston College. He said Cave was a selfless person, adding that one of his weaknesses could have been his kindness. (JS)
