PEARLINE DOWNES is anxiously looking forward to when the Rural Development Commission (RDC) hands over her new home.
Downes, who had been living in a dilapidated house in Bathsheba, St Joseph for years, told the DAILY NATION she was happy and relieved, and mostly thankful to Minister of Housing and Lands Denis Kellman for coming to her assistance.
Her plight was highlighted in the media earlier this year when it was discovered that she lived in a house that provided no refuge from the elements because of rotted boards and roofing. It also lacked basic amenities.
Yesterday the 70-year-old said workmen came at the end of September and pulled down her hovel and in short order constructed a one-bedroom home in its place.
