Focus on services

BARBADOS MUST MOVE the tourism focus beyond airline seats and hotel occupancies and pay attention to the value of services offered in the tourism industry.

Senior fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Dr Keith Nurse, said the island was ahead of the rest of the Caribbean with the tourism services it offered.

However, he suggested that expansion of this sector could bring added value and help  to address the economic challenges.

Sharing his findings in an OAS tourism research project with an audience at Cave Hill yesterday, Nurse acknowledged Barbados as a leader in tourism services in the  Caribbean, adding this was one possible means by which the island’s economic  problems such as export earnings, debt repayment and employment could be alleviated.
