SOME OF THE island’s better gospel artistes took to the stage for the Independence Gospel Explosion concert at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex last Sunday.
Regrettably the first half of the show, which lasted just under three hours, was overburdened with 13 acts. A bright spot, however, was the involvement of the children who ministered in song.
Mareya Hosein stood out for her rendition of Go Light Your World. Her confidence was evident as she sang with ease and kept a hum in the audience. The Bel Canto Singers were also a hit doing two numbers and led in the singing of the National Anthem.
It was also a special time for veteran journalist and former recording artiste Emmanuel Joseph, who peeled back the years to pay tribute in song to the late Joseph Niles. He was joined by former krosfyah front singer Henderson Quimby and Sheldon Miller to do a medley of Niles’ hits: This Train, Royal Telephone and Just A Rose Will Do.
Also appearing were the youthful Lekenya Prescod and the Halal Dancers (below).
Main act Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers out of the United States brought down the curtain with an hour long ministry.
They did not disappoint as they reached out with Let Everything That Hath Breath, God Great God, Still Have My Praise and I’ve Seen Him Do it with lots of energy. The crowd responded with praises and applause. (RL)
