FORMER LEADER of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), Owen Arthur, believes democracy in Barbados is at risk if political organisations make it their business to start expelling members.
His feelings came yesterday after expelled BLP MP Dr Maria Agard confirmed she would be taking legal action against the party for sending her packing on November 22.
“It doesn’t come as a shock to me that she has taken legal action,” Arthur said. “In 14 years of leading the Barbados Labour Party, it never crossed my mind to expel members, and I wouldn’t know how to begin to want to expel a sitting MP,” the former prime minister told the DAILY NATION.
“It [Agard’s expulsion] remains a mind-boggling matter. It is not the purpose of the institution to treat people that way. There are members who even joined other political parties. . . (BA)
