THE ISLAND’S NATIONAL WASTE COLLECTION AGENCY is bracing for major garbage pile-ups, which are already building, as the Christmas season approaches its peak.
Sources within the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) revealed to the DAILY NATION that only 15 of the state agency’s 25 trucks were in service.
Earlier this year, Minister of Health John Boyce reported that Barbados generated about 300 to 400 tonnes of domestic waste per day.
According to one SSA source, this amount was expected to rise by about 60 per cent at the height of the Christmas season and this could spell problems.
“The few trucks they have are working real, real hard,” he said.
