BARBADIANS may be spending more this Christmas but they are certainly giving much less to the poor.

And a top official of the Salvation Army revealed yesterday that just a quarter of the $800 000 it wanted to run its charitable work on the island for the coming year had been collected.

Leading the appeal for Barbadians to give more was the Salvation Army’s public relations officer Major Denzil Walcott, who gave the vote of thanks at yesterday’s annual Christmas hamper giveaway where the Christian church and charity gave away 3 000 hampers, starting at its Reed Street, Bridgetown headquarters.

“As of Saturday, December 12, we have collected $221 133. 21. Therefore, if you have not yet given, do so now and if you have – give a little more,” he said.
