SEVERAL PEOPLE were injured in an accident which occurred along Maxwell Main Road, Christ Church earlier today.
A Route Taxi, ZR 351, and a car were involved in the collision opposite Elcourt Clinic. Twelve people were in the ZR, including driver Oscar Maloney. There was a lone male driver in the car. His name has not been released.
Some of the injured were treated at the scene and others were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance.
According to an eye-witness, a young woman was trapped in the front seat of the Route Taxi and fire officials had to use the Jaws of Life to extract her.
The driver of the car was also injured.
Maloney told NATION Online he saw the car veer from the left side of the road to the right and he hesitated before pulling away, but felt the impact of the collision soon after.
He complained of pains to the back and legs, but said the passengers praised him for how he handled the situation.
“The response was favourable, because I even told the police had I not been the driver that I am, it could have been worse,” he said, “because a head-on collision at that speed and that time, all three of us that were there would have died.
“No,” he amended, “we would have been seriously injured, I don’t want to say die.”
Police cordoned off the area and diverted vehicular traffic.
Two ambulances, one rescue tender and one fire tender responded to the scene.
Police spokesman acting assistant superintendent David Welch confirmed there were “quite a few accidents across the island” today.
“We are appealing to motorists and pedestrians to exercise greater caution going into the holidays, especially in Bridgetown,” Welch said. (BN/TSG)
