SOME DRONE OWNERS have endorsed Government’s plans to implement legislation around the operation of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) come 2016.

The owners, who mainly use their drones for aerial photography, said they agreed with tougher restrictions being in place to prevent incorrect use, but also highlighted a few issues they believed should be dealt with.

A release from the Ministry of Defence and Security carried in the last SUNDAY SUN outlined the proposed stance. It said: “In 2016, measures will be taken to introduce a legislative framework that will require, among other things, the registration of all drones in Barbados with the appropriate authorities. An audit of the numbers of drones will also be required.

“These measures are in an effort to ensure public safety and that the rights of the public are protected while still allowing legitimate recreational and commercial operators to conduct their affairs with certainty.”
