NEWLY APPOINTED High Court judge Pamela Beckles is calling for greater security at the island’s Magistrates’ Courts.

Justice Beckles, the former Chief Magistrate who was promoted this month, told the MIDWEEK NATION in an interview that at the lower court emotions could run high when accused were first charged and especially in high-profile cases.

She said that while judges were provided with a security officer, that was not so for magistrates who must exercise a certain level of caution as emotions were raw when some matters first came to court.

“When matters come before the Magistrates’ Courts, tempers are high and the situation is volatile. We tend to have more anger at the Magistrates’ Courts and interference with the system,” she added.
