Not only Blacks

RALPH “BIZZY” WILLIAMS’ explosive response as a white Barbadian to a highly charged claim that Barbados is “the freest black nation in the world” has touched off another local debate about race.

Williams complained that the contribution of whites was slighted at the launch of year-long celebrations to mark the country’s 50th anniversary of Independence.

But what do the so-called “poor whites”, some of whom live simply in the rural communities of Church View and Newcastle Park in St John, think about their role in building Barbados and the state of their own lives?

Richard Fenty told the WEEKEND NATION when a team visited the area that the country had been developed with the hard work of everyone, black and white.
