ALERT RESIDENTS from Deacons Farm Housing Area, St Michael, saved a canteen from destruction yesterday afternoon.

Curt’s Variety, owned and operated by Curtis Actie, caught fire just before 1 p.m. But station officer Gordon Boxill of the Barbados Fire Service said it was the residents’ efforts that averted the destruction of the property.

Neighbours noticed smoke coming from the roof of the closed canteen and immediately sprang into action.

Desmond Lashley, who lives across from the canteen, told the Daily Nation a woman called him and said it was on fire. (RL)
