AFTER SPENDING ALMOST two weeks in a medically induced coma, 16-year-old Ikhari Hinds-Lewis is now conscious and breathing on his own.

“Ikhari has been out of the coma for about a week now. Both eyes are wide open. He’s been breathing on his own for the last three days,” his relieved mother Kassim Hinds told the WEEKEND NATION yesterday.

She said the doctors brought him out of the coma gradually by lightening his sedation. However, she noted that he was not yet speaking, even though he seemed able to understand some things being said.

Nonetheless, Kassim said she was happy that he was awake. “I am thrilled beyond belief to see my son’s eyes wide open and looking at me. To see his eyes and with life in them and to feel his hand squeezing mine, is nothing short of a miracle,” Kassim said.
