THE CHANGE in strategy by the police force to fight the upsurge in gun-related crimes appears to be working.

That observation has come from acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce, though he stopped short of declaring the results a success.

“I’m satisfied that we are on the right road in terms of our response, in terms of managing that situation,” he said on Friday at the end of a course for criminal investigators.

Crime was up seven per cent last year, which he attributed, in part, to the work of the police in fighting the illegal drug trade.

Major crimes against the person went up by nine per cent, minor crimes against persons increased 19 per cent, major crime against property stood at 25 per cent and minor crimes against the property was 23 per cent.

The assistant commissioner admitted that the police hierarchy had become uncomfortable with the increase and its resultant impact on the populace, forcing a review of the crime-fighting strategy. (WILLCOMM)
