WHEN THE conch shell blows, you know the fish men are coming.
This was the case in Britton’s Hill, St Michael, when the familiar booming noise echoed, soon followed by young men in a truck bearing a large icebox of jacks.
Driver Joey Foster said the haul was caught at Paynes Bay, St James, and they were in the process of taking the fish all round the island.
“We now come down from town side – the Orleans and Chapman Lane. We already sell about four bins and each bin does hold about 1 000 pounds of fish. Now we just driving and blowing the horn – when you hear that, you know it is fish time,” he said.
Foster said they usually hit the streets with fish every other week once the catch was good. He said they always kept things fresh. If fish was kept on ice for three days or more, then it was given away for free. (CA)
