THE ONGOING TOWN HALL meetings on health care financing in Barbados have been “hijacked”, says Minister of Health John Boyce.
The culprit, he said, was the sideline debate on the “fat tax”, which created robust feedback from the bigger members of society and other quarters, and which was later said to have been misrepresented in the Press.
“My reading though . . . has been to explain that it is not about a fat tax, but it is about a regime which sees Barbados maintain a healthier offering in all respects, in terms of our lifestyle.”
During opening remarks at Tuesday night’s town hall meeting at the Ivan Harewood Centre of the Christ Church Parish Church, Boyce said the country had already made some breakthrough advances in that regard, and referred to the ten per cent tax placed on sweetened beverages in the last Budget.
