SOME OF THE operations at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) are contributing to the “bleeding” of the health care system.
That charge came from president of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP), Dr Carlos Chase, who was a panellist at Tuesday night’s town hall meeting on the cost of health care in Barbados, held in the Ivan Harewood Centre of Christ Church Parish Church.
He was querying why key departments like the labs, social services, radiology, laundry and administration were not running on the same 24-hour basis as the hospital.
“This is a hospital, the only general hospital in the island, and none of these things work 24 hours, and this is 2016 . . . . The nurses [work] shift 24 hours, the guards come and work 24 hours; why are the support services not working 24 hours? And that is where we get our bleeding in the system. So you out all of this money in excess overtime. That is where you have a bleeding in the system as well,” Chase said.
