BARBADOS will soon give the University of the West Indies a payment plan setting out how it intends to reduce its $240 million debt to the institution.

Word about the Government’s financial move was communicated to UWI chancellor Sir George Alleyne and new vice chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles.

“We believe the Government’s commitment is to be respected. The Prime Minister [Freundel Stuart] and the Minister of Finance [Chris Sinckler] have given us an indication that this is a priority for them,” Sir Hilary told the WEEKEND Nation in New York.

“They are working it through and we are looking forward to deepening our conversation. I certainly trust the word of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance that we will get some alleviation because the debt is hurting the university’s research and learning facilities considerably.”
