THE CALL for the country to seriously look at a national health insurance scheme continues to be echoed.
On Monday night at the final Ministry of Health town hall meeting, Director of the National Insurance Scheme Ian Carrington made the call for the country to take a look at such a scheme when considering the handling of health care financing.
The director said that a national health insurance scheme (NHIS) or public pool should be considered as  39 per cent of the country’s total health care bill was being paid by Barbadians out of their own pockets.
This was despite the World Health Organisation’s recommendation that the figure should not exceed  20 per cent.
