BARBADOS’ top international surfer Chelsea Tuach started her World Surf League (WSL) tour with a commendable fifth place at the Taggart Women’s Pro at Merewether Beach in New South Wales, Australia.

Tuach won her round six heat against Hawaiian standout surfer and 2015 World junior champion Mahina Maeda, with powerful, fluid surfing to advance to the quarter-finals against the No. 1 seed and eventual champion, Sally Fitzgibbons.

Tuach, who is sponsored by Roxy, Suzuki Caribbean, Sol, Dragon and Chefette, controlled the first half of the heat before Fitzgibbons got two consecutive waves in the good range to edge her for the win.

“I am super stoked to have made the quarters and take fifth at my first event of the year. My boards are feeling great. I am hoping to keep the momentum going in my next event at Manly Beach, the Australian Open Of Surfing,” Tuach said in her post-heat interview.
