THE FUTURE OF BARBADOS’ economy rests in the hands of local entrepreneurs. And the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) has been hailed as a critical entity in the advancement of local business building.

Last night in celebration of the YES programme’s 20-year Anniversary Awards Ceremony, Minister of Sports Youth and Culture Stephen Lashley told a packed audience at Sweet Field Manor, Brittons Hill, St Michael, the country benefited significantly in finances through entrepreneurship and pledged support.

“The government will continue to support [you],” he said. “We want to make Barbados the number one [place of] entrepreneurship by 2020.”

Historian Dr Henderson Carter, who delivered the feature address, left words of advice with the awardees.

He urged the young business owners to ensure their businesses were passed from generation to generation.

“Think far ahead, think of your business in 2060,” the senior lecturer at UWI Cave Hill suggested.

He added that as young creative minds they should still look at the success of older business owners to grow as professionals.

Manager of the YES programme Selma Green offered congratulatory remarks to the award recipients. Fighting tears, Green said she was encouraged by those who became involved in the programme. (MR)
